What is 1P-LSD? Effects, risks and what you need to know.

1P-LSD ('1-Propionyl-LSD') is a drug similar to LSD. Very little research has been done on 1P-LSD. However, the effects of 1P-LSD are very similar to those of LSD. But it is not yet entirely clear whether the risks are the same.

We do know that among outbounders, 2.7% had ever used 1P-LSD. Of that group, 10% had ever used LSD, by comparison. Outgoing people are indeed a group where more drugs are used than is average in the Netherlands.

Effects and effects of 1P-LSD

The effects and action of 1P-LSD are believed to be the same as the effects of LSD². The effects last between 6 and 12 hours.

• A person experiences colours, sounds, touch and smells more intensely than normal
• Someone sees shapes and patterns moving
• Emotions are heightened: someone can become very happy and joyful but also sad and anxious
• Someone experiences time differently
• Someone gets more energy
• Senses can intermingle: for example, someone 'sees' music

1P-LSD microdosing

There are people who use very small amounts of 1P-LSD. This is microdosing mentioned. These people do not want to experience a full trip. It is not yet clear whether microdosing really works or is due to the placebo effect. However, there are risks. For instance, someone may accidentally take too much and still trip. It is also unwise to microdose for people with psychological complaints such as anxiety and panic because these complaints can get worse.

Risks of 1P-LSD

Probably the risks of 1P-LSD are similar to those of LSD:

• An 'bad trip', where a person finds the effects too intense and becomes anxious or confused. This is the biggest risk. A bad trip happens faster if someone is not feeling well or has mental health issues
• Muscle cramps and nausea
• Only being able to think negatively and being 'stuck' in these thoughts. A person may experience this as a kind of 'loop', a circle in which thoughts are always the same.
• A psychosis. A person sees, hears and thinks things that are not true but seem real. In acute drug psychosis, this disappears again as soon as the drug wears off.
